What is included in each Serenity House room?
All rooms are private with a large bathroom and double doors that open to a private patio. The rooms are equipped with an adjustable bed, over-the-bed table, nightstand, bureau, flat screen TV, telephone and small refrigerator. Many rooms include an upholstered chair that converts to a twin sleeper for the comfort of family members. The bathrooms include a wheelchair accessible shower.
How are meals handled?
Serenity House employs a professional chef who prepares meals daily that meet individual patient needs. Nutritious snacks are available around-the-clock. Patient and families are invited to bring favorite foods and beverages which can be easily stored in the refrigerator located in each room.
What should I bring?
Bring the items that will make you the most comfortable, such as your personal toiletries, favorite pajamas or cozy blanket. We want you to feel at home. Treasured photographs can be displayed on the nightstand. You may wish to bring some of your favorite music CDs. Our Music Therapist will load them onto one of our iPods for you to use in your room.
When are visiting hours?
We welcome visitors 24 hours days, 7 days a week. We do ask that you call first if visiting after 8pm or before 7am. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult when visiting.
Can pets visit?
We encourage four-legged visitors as long as they are house-broken, leashed, and on their best behavior. All pets must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.
Do I have to be receiving hospice care to live at Serenity House?
Yes, you must be a patient with Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care to be eligible to stay at Serenity House. Please call our Hospice office at 805-965-5555 and ask for the Hospice Admissions Department to begin the process.
Who will be caring for me?
Our Hospice team is specially trained and consists of a medical director, a nurse practitioner, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses hospice aides, medical social workers, spiritual and bereavement counselors, a certified music therapist, registered dietician, chef and volunteers. Serenity House has a Registered nurse on duty 24 hours a day. Many of our clinical staff have earned advanced certification in hospice and palliative medicine or nursing.
What about laundry?
We provide clean linens, towels and night time wear. Personal laundry should be done by family or friends.
How do I pay for my care at Serenity House?
Medicare, MediCal and many private health insurance policies provide a benefit that covers hospice services, and when medically appropriate, some initial room and board. We work closely with patients’ medical insurance to maximize the portion that insurance covers. Serenity House room and board is not generally covered by Medicare or insurance. We offer care on a sliding fee scale, if needed. Our charitable mission ensures that no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.
