Recovering from Surgery at Home
If you or a loved one needs joint replacement surgery your doctor has most likely told you how important the first days and weeks following surgery are. The early part of the recovery period is a critical time for improving joint motion and muscle strength. In-home rehabilitation is a good way to get started when you return home from the hospital. Our physical therapists can help you follow your doctor’s exercise recommendations, monitor the healing of your surgical wound and help you take medication to manage your pain. They also teach you how to use an assistive device, such as a walker or cane, as well as assess any safety issues in your home. Our occupational therapists provide instruction and training with everyday activities such as bathing, dressing and meal preparation, and assess for adaptive equipment that may help you perform these more easily and safely.
If you require special medical equipment during your recovery, the Loan Closet offers free short-term loan of basic aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes and bathroom safety items.
