Reaching Out to Other Communities
The VNHC Hospice Department has established a partnership with the Viagenco Integrated Care Program in Mbita, Kenya.  The partnership was established through The Foundation for Hospice in Sub-Saharan Africa.  We see this partnership as an opportunity to raise awareness in our community about the AIDS crisis in Africa and are very exited to share our knowledge, resources and experiences in hospice and palliative care with another country.  We have held fundraisers for Viagenco in 2005 and 2006. Local community members and VNHC employees now sponsor over 70 Viagenco orphans of parents who passed away due to HIV/AIDS, for the cost of education and school uniforms. Over the summer, Susan Saperstein, Hospice RN responsible for spearheading the Viagenco project, and David Laskin, Hospice RN Clinical Supervisor (pictured below) took a trip to Mbita, Kenya where they had the opportunity to meet and interact with the people who benefit from the money raised. They were able to bring over medical supplies and gifts for the families.
