yachts of lovelogo 10th anniversary

In its 10th year, the Santa Barbara Yacht Club Charity Regatta passed the mark of cumulatively raising more than $1 million to benefit Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care!

On Saturday, September 6, more than 350 friends and supporters of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care gathered at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club to celebrate the 10th Annual “Yachts of Love” Charity Regatta and support Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. Thanks to the community’s generosity and support, this year’s event successfully raised over $170,000, and since its inception in 2005 has cumulatively raised over $1 million. The funds raised enable Santa Barbara County community members to have access to quality compassionate health care from Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. Lynda Tanner thanked the Yacht Club saying, “We are so grateful to the Yacht Club for choosing to benefit VNHC these past ten years. It has been a successful partnership that has not only collectively raised over $1 million, but has also enabled VNHC to bring renewed health and comfort to thousands of people in Santa Barbara.”

2014 Regatta CollageTo start the day, guests enjoyed a welcome reception with mimosas, hors d’oeuvres, and the sounds of Dixieland music playing. Then, more than 10 Yacht Club members welcomed Regatta guests aboard their yachts, so that more than 160 guests could enjoy the race from the sea. Before the race began, the Harbor Patrol boats performed a ceremonial ‘Fire Dance,’ complete with fire hoses, to send the racers on their way.

The Regatta celebrated eight young local sailors from the Santa Barbara Yacht Club Youth Foundation. The youth, ranging in age from 9 to 17 years of age, served as ‘Youth Foundation Skippers’ onboard the race boats. The Santa Barbara Yacht Club Women raises money to provide scholarships so all Santa Barbara youth can learn to sail through the Foundation.

After the race ended, guests headed back to the Yacht Club to enjoy a full barbecue dinner, and a final chance to bid on the exclusive silent auction items. During the Evening Program, Robyn Parker, Chair of this year’s Regatta, thanked the generous sponsors, saying, “I’m thrilled to share that we raised more this year than in any previous year! Also, we hit an incredible record this year – we passed the $1 million mark for funds raised for Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care since this event started in 2005!!! Thank you to all of you – and the incredible committee who made this happen!” Parker also played auctioneer for the coveted live auction item, a Maritime Museum private party for 20. There were over 40 winners of the exciting silent and live auction items – and one raffle winner of a gift basket filled with wine and restaurant certificates. Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care extends a big thank you to all of the auction donors.

During the Race Awards Ceremony, Santa Barbara Yacht Club Race Director Brad Schaupeter congratulated the winners of the race with a gift bag. The winners were: Taxi Dancer helmed by 14 year old Matt Pierce for the PHRF A fleet; Repeat, helmed by 14 year old Nick Harteck for the PHRF B fleet; Pleione for the Harbor 20’s; and California Girl for the H fleet. The coveted prize of the day went to Mary Lee Hopkins with Allegro non Troppo, winning the Yachts of Love trophy for the crew who brought in the most donations in relation to the size of boat.

In addition to nearly 30 sailboats that competed in this year’s Charity Regatta, many more boats of all shapes and sizes were on the water – from spectator boats to some of Santa Barbara’s finest racing vessels – all enjoying a beautiful day on the Pacific Ocean.

Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care is grateful to all who attended this event and extends a warm thank you to the Regatta Steering Committee, and particularly the Santa Barbara Yacht Club for hosting another successful Charity Regatta and for their continued support and partnership.
